How To Get Yourself Motivated After A Lay-Off
After taking a break from the gym and away from your diet, either because you were just too busy to go, you become injured, or other things just happened to get in the way, it can feel like a very large struggle to find it within yourself to get back on the bandwagon.
What many people find is that once they have the momentum going where they're in their groove and are doing their regular workouts it's not all that hard to continue, but it's getting that momentum started in the first place that proves to be quite the challenge.
If this is the situation that you find yourself in, then it's going to be helpful to consider a few of the following tips which will help to spark that motivation inside yourself once again and get you right back on track with your program plan.
Here's what you need to know.
Think Back To Your Former Program
The very first thing that you can do to find it within yourself to get back on track after a layout is to think back to how you felt when doing your former program.
There's no question that those who are exercising regularly feel better about themselves on a day to day basis and have a great deal more confidence in how their body looks and functions.
If you can focus on those feelings that you felt at that one point in time and then compare it with how you're feeling right now that you're not exercising or eating right, this difference may be enough to spark the change in you that you need.
Very often we're motivated by bad foods and sitting on the couch because these activities often instant gratification.
Working out and eating right is going to provide great benefits over the long term, but sometimes we have to wait to see them.
It's going to take some effort to accept this and to push past that short-term gratification to realize your long term goals but once you're able to realize this and make the commitment, it will only get easier from that time onwards.
Get The Support You Need
Second, the next thing that you should be sure to do is get any support that you need. Perhaps you need a workout buddy to get you motivated to get back on track again.
Or maybe, investing in a session with a personal trainer to put you on a new workout program that you find highly interesting would do the trick.
Whatever it is that you think you need, seek out the help to put your plan into action. You definitely do not have to go about this alone so having support for every step of the way can make a great difference.
Take Baby Steps
Third, another key thing that you must remember is to take baby steps as you go about making these changes.
If you were quite into your fitness and diet routine in the past, chances are you have become a little disappointed in the fact that you've let yourself slip. In this case you are also much more likely to expect yourself to dive right back into it and be right up to speed with where you were before.
This would be a bit mistake however. You must remember that after a lay-off it will take a bit of time to regain where you left off so expecting yourself to perform to the same intensity would set yourself up for disappointment.
Instead, focus on baby steps. Start making an active effort to do two gym sessions a week and once you're consistent with that, try three or four.
By building up to where you were previously it will seem that much more manageable and you're less likely to wind up sore, injured, and frustrated that you've let yourself become out of shape.
So there you have the top things to know when you're getting back into your routine after taking time off. The good news is that if you were once fairly fit, you will regain this fitness level faster than it originally took to obtain, so if you can get the momentum going again, it won't be long before you're moving even further forward past your previous level.
